日本のティータオルを届けたい

日本でいわゆる「ティータオル」がお店で販売されているのを見たことがありますか？
布巾や手拭い、風呂敷、お弁当包みなどの布製品は観光地の日本土産屋さんで見かけることはありますが、皆さんがご家庭で使っているティータオルを私は日本のデパート等で見たことがありません。もちろんオンラインで海外産のティータオルは見たことはありますが、そもそも「ティータオル」という言葉さえあまりピンとこない方も多いのではないでしょうか。

私は20代になるまでティータオルの存在を知りませんでした。シドニーのある家庭でホームステイをした時に初めてその存在と便利さをを知りました。気づけばそれから30余年、私の家庭ではずっとティータオルを使っています。残念なことに日本ではあまりティータオルを使う習慣がないので海外旅行先でもあまり購入意欲が出てこないのが現実だと思います。しかし、私は海外へ行くたびに必ずその土地のティータオルを購入します。この事業を始めたきっかけがまさにその想いからで、海外の方に日本の素晴らしい職人技を持って作られたMade in Japanのティータオルを是非使っていただきたいという至ってシンプルな動機から起業をしました。

ティータオルも機能性や布の種類がとても重要です。かなり時間をかけて生地を探し、そして何度も試用の生地で洗濯を繰り返したりしながら、理想的な生地に出会いました。私のこだわりは必ずリネンが入っているということです。コットンだけでは出てこない風合いと肌触り、吸水性や乾燥のしやすさなど、何か月もかけて検証を繰り返しました。

次はデザインの選定です。私はデザイナーでも、イラストレターを使いこなせるわけでもないのでデザインの決定には大きなジレンマと時間を要しました。結果、「浮世絵」を選びました。浮世絵を扱っているギャラリーや博物館などを訪れました。浮世絵は学べば学ぶほど奥が深く、その色使いやテーマ、構図などは絵画としても高く評価されているようです。当時の庶民文化を知る上でも貴重な版画芸術です。私はこのティータオルを通じて、是非この美しい浮世絵も世界へ広めたいと思っています。

Have you ever seen "tea towels" sold in retail stops in Japan?

While you can find fabric products like kitchen cloths, hand towels, furoshiki (wrapping cloths), and bento wrapping cloths in souvenir shops in tourist areas, I have never seen tea towels that people use in other countries in Japanese department stores, etc. Of course, I've seen overseas-made tea towels online, but I do not think many Japanese people don't even know what "tea towels" are.

I actually didn't know about tea towels until I was in my twenties. I learned about their existence and convenience for the first time when I did a homestay in a family in Sydney. Ever since, my family has been using tea towels for over 30 years since then. Unfortunately, in Japan, there is not much of a custom of using tea towels but I always buy tea towels from the places I visit overseas. The idea for starting up this business came from that thought, and I would like people overseas to use genuine Japanese tea towels made with Japan's wonderful techniques and traditions .

The functionality of tea towels and their fabric type are also very important. I spent a lot of time searching for fabrics, and after repeated washings the trial fabrics, I finally found the ideal fabric. I was particular about choosing line-blend fabric.  It took months to verify the fabric,  especially focusing on the texture, absorption and dryability.

Next is the selection of designs. I am not a designer who can make full use of illustrators, so the design decision took a great time. As a result, I chose "ukiyo-e". I visited galleries and museums that have ukiyo-e. The more you learn about ukiyo-e, the deeper it becomes, and its coloring, themes, and composition seem to be highly evaluated as paintings. It is a valuable woodblock print art for learning about the culture of the common people at that time. Through this tea towel, I would like to spread this beautiful ukiyo-e all over the world.
